Died Tuesday, March 12, 2013
Atlanta resident
Robert Arnold Stanfield, 80, of Atlanta, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital just 19 days away from his 81st Birthday. Born in Barnesville to Michael Arnold and Addie (Mae Goodson) Stanfield, he lived most of his life in North Atlanta.
Known as “Bob” or “Bobby” to his close friends and family, he was a passionate man who enjoyed being a hairstylist at his beauty shop where he worked for over 50 years as the Owner of Robert’s Hairstyling in Buckhead. In his spare time he enjoyed landscaping, gardening, and mostly fishing.
Robert was extremely loving and proud of all his grandchildren — Tim, Alex, Sydney, Caitlyn, Shelley, Kelly and Andy. He is also survived by his two sisters Francis West, of Atlanta, Dorothy Crowder of Griffin; and his best friend, Collette Conroy also of Griffin who has been by his side caring for him since the passing of this beloved wife of 52 years, Elinor; his two sons Kevin Stanfield (Kathy Minter), and Bert (wife Teresa) Stanfield and his daughter Anna Stanfield all of Cumming.
Robert entered the Navy in August 1950 after graduating from Spalding High School in Griffin. He served on the USS Dixie (AD-14) for two years and the USS Stickell (DD-888)for another two years during the Korean conflict. He then came to Atlanta–Buckhead, in 1954. He also attended Oglethorpe University for short time before attending cosmetology school in order to become licensed to be a hairdresser.
He was a member of the “Pop Concert” group where he met his future bride Elinor Irene Woodham. They were married in November of 1955. Together they owned and operated the beauty salon.
He was an avid fisherman and back in the early 60’s after he and Elinor visited Cypress Gardens in Florida, decided that he’d have a go with “Kite Flying”. He was known briefly as “Kiteman on Lake Lanier”. Elinor would drive the ski boat and tow him on skis until he got fast enough to actually fly up in the air.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at H. M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel. Memorial donations may be made in Robert’s name to the National Kidney Foundation.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel in Brookhaven. Graveside services to be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville at 2:30 p.m.
