Griffin High junior Christian Mendoza scored his team’s only goal in a 4-1 loss Friday night at Memorial Stadium against Locust Grove in Region 4-AAA boys soccer.

It was the fourth loss in a row for Griffin (1-7 overall, 0-4 region), which has now last seven of its last eight and remained winless in region play. Locust Grove (2-4 overall, 1-2 region), meanwhile, snapped a three-match losing streak as it posted its first region victory of the season.

The match was much tighter than the final score indicates.

While Locust Grove scored early in the match, Griffin evened the score on a penalty kick by Mendoza with 12:02 left to play in the first half. The Wildcats managed to score with 2:51 left to play in the half. The match, however, was tightly contested thereafter — both teams getting its chances — until the Wildcats struck like lightning, scoring with 24:28 left and then with 23:00 left to ice the victory.

Griffin continues its season March 19 at Jonesboro.
