Millard Lee Stewart Jr., 78, of Griffin, Ga., passed away Tuesday morning, March 5 at his home after an extended illness. Millard was born in Griffin on Jan. 1, 1935, to the late Millard Lee Stewart Sr. and Marie Lackey Stewart Mullins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Larry Edwin Stewart and sister Joann Stewart Cook. Millard graduated from Griffin High in 1953, where he lettered in all sports he played, and married his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Anne Lord, on Dec. 27 of that same year. Millard attended Southern Technical College and was a member of the baseball team in 1954. He later earned his B.B.A. degree from the University of Georgia in Athens.
While serving in The United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, Millard was stationed in Laredo, Texas, and Nagoya, Japan, where he was a member of the baseball team. Upon returning to the States, he was stationed in Mountain Home, Idaho. Millard and Anne returned to Griffin to raise their three sons: Mel, Mark and Clark. A member of Hanleiter United Methodist Church, Millard served as a Sunday School teacher and on various church committees. He received great fulfillment from studying God’s word and sharing it with others. Millard loved to play golf with “the group,” who became lifelong buddies. He was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather and always provided Christian guidance for his family and friends.
Millard is survived by his loving wife Anne Lord Stewart of Griffin; sons Millard Lee Stewart III (Mel) and wife Sandi of Edmond, Okla.; Mark Vann Stewart and wife Susie of St. Marys, Ga.; Clark Lord Stewart and wife Karen of Albuquerque, N.M.; granddaughter Alysse Stewart Cornwall and husband Logan of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandson Joshua Colin Stewart of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandsons Matthew Lord Stewart and Andrew Christian Stewart of Edmond, Okla.; grandson Adam Christopher Stewart of St. Marys, Ga.; great-granddaughter Phoenix LeAnne Cornwall of Albuquerque, N.M.; and brothers Donald Leon Stewart of Huntsville, Ala.; Thomas Gwynn Stewart of Newnan, Ga.; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Millard Lee Stewart Jr. will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Hanleiter United Methodist Church. The Rev. Steve Cox and the Rev. Terry Hunter will officiate. Interment will follow in Westwood Gardens. Friends may visit the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at the funeral home.

Mr. James Eli Snow

Mr. James Eli Snow, 87, of Griffin, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at his residence.
Mr. Snow was born on April 14, 1925 in Forsyth, Georgia to the late Benjamin Snow, Sr. and the late Annie Mildred Morrison Snow. He is also preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Trice; brother, Benjamin Franklin Snow, Jr. Mr. Snow was an active member of First Baptist Church of Orchard Hill, where he served in multiple positions and was an active member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946, aboard the LST 676 and the LST 1130. His landing craft was charged with transporting Commanding Officers and Staff ashore. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Front, the American Theatre and the Occupation of Japan. His LST1130 was awaiting orders in the harbor when the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan.
In the early ‘50’s, he owned and operated Snow’s Garage on 8th St. and in the later ‘50’s, he owned and operated Snow’s Full Service Station on Experiment St. He started work at Pomona Products and retired after 24 years in 1984 as a supervisor. Mr. Snow was a member of the RV Maps Volunteers traveling to churches/colleges doing repairs and mission work. He was a co-pilot of the Pilot Club of Griffin for the last 31 years. Mr. Snow was a master mechanic and known as a jack of all trades. He enjoyed helping neighbors and strangers with any and all problems. Converting his van he transported friends and neighbors to Dr.’s appointments and hospital visits. For the last 15 years, Mr. Snow had volunteered his time, talents and services to the Griffin Area Resource Center and Quality Living Alternatives, striving to improve life for his many buddies. He received Volunteer of the Year for several years during his time there.
Survivors include his wife, of 66 years, Sara Magalene Howell Snow; daughter, Janice Snow Parker; granddaughter, Traci Parker Welch; 2 great granddaughters, Rachelmae and Adrianna Welch; several nieces and nephews; his constant companion, Precious, who will miss him greatly.
The family would like to thank Brightmoor Hospice for their car and support, especially the family caregivers, Lizzie Fair and Mason Erikson.
Visitation for Mr. James Eli Snow will be on Friday, March 8, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Friends can visit 1 hour prior to the service.
