John Adrian Sherrell

John Adrian Sherrell, 76, of Jackson, Ga., passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Westbury Medical Care Home.

He was born Oct. 9, 1936, in Pepperton, Ga., to the late George Deventer Sherrell and the late Mary Will Carr Sherrell. John enjoyed writing, fishing, reading and spending time with his family. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He was a graduate of Cincinnati College of Embalming. John was a licensed minister, funeral director, embalmer, a member of the Jackson First Baptist Church, St John’s Lodge F&AM 45, Gideons International, Georgia Funeral Directors Association and National Funeral Directors Association. He and his wife began Sherrell Funeral Home in 1967 and continued his service until recently due to declining health. John ran the local ambulance service for many years and served as coroner for 14 years. He is preceded in death by grandson, Matt Cardell; brothers, Bobby Reynolds, Victor Sherrell, George (Butch) Sherrell Jr., and Richard Sherrell.

John is survived by his wife, Margaret Rawls Sherrell, of Jackson; sons and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Ann Rooks, of Flovilla, Dennis Rooks, of Jackson; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Eddie Cardell, of McDonough, Bonnie and Russell Richardson, of Jackson; 12 grandchildren; a large number of great-grandchildren; sisters, Bonnie Dull, of Griffin, Janie Ryan, of Virginia; brother, Dave Sherrell, of California; brother-in-law, Ralph Cook, of Jackson; sisters-in-law, Mary McCrackin and Eva Sherrell, both of Jackson, Betty Rawls, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for John Sherrell will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Jackson with Dr. Benny Tate, the Rev. Robert Henderson and the Rev. Daniel Peavy officiating. Interment will be at Jackson City Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Frances Skelton Spann, former Griffin resident, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in Jackson Lake, Ga. She was 85.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel, Headland, Ala.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Brenda Barron (Jerry), Ocala, Fla., and Wylene Tomlin (Chris), Jackson Lake, Ga.; two brothers; and six grandchildren, Vanessa Wood, Deryl Everette, Cheryl Everette, Lynn Taylor, Allan Hawkins Jr. and Larry Payton Jr.

Mrs. Martha Ross Howard

Mrs. Martha Ross Howard, 78, of Thomaston, died Feb. 22, 2013, at Brightmoor Hospice, Griffin.

Mrs. Howard was born on June 25, 1934, in Pike County to the late Sewell and Mary Ross. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Howard was a member of the Emanuel Baptist Church in Pike County. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mrs. Shirley Parker.

Survivors include her husband Mr. William Howard of Thomaston; daughters Mrs. Debra (Mike) Whitehead of Thomaston, Mrs. Rita (Tommy) Allen of Thomaston; sons Mr. Bruce “Stephen” (Sandra) Howard of Thomaston, Mr. Billy Pitts of Thomaston; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, from the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.

Mr. William Earl Rowe

Oct. 16, 1928—Feb. 21, 2013

Pike County resident

Mr. William Earl Rowe, 84, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at his residence in Pike County.

Mr. Rowe was the son of the late Christine Smith Rowe and James Hardie Rowe of Griffin. He graduated from Griffin High and since 1972 was the owner of Spalding Concrete Company. After sixty-one years at the company, he retired due to ill health. He was inducted into the Spalding County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987 for Outstanding Achievement in Football and was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Charles Robert Rowe; daughter, Mary Rowe Chambers Schnizler; his first wife, Kathryn King Rowe; second wife, Betty Zeigler Roberts Rowe.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, Jim and Joyce Rowe of Griffin, Wesley Earl and Ellen Rowe of Griffin; grandchildren, Amanda Chambers Blizzard (Paul) of Macon, Grant Rowe of Zebulon, Dr. Brandy Rowe Kennedy (Steven) of Milledgeville, Ethan Rowe of Griffin, Emily Rowe of Griffin; six great grandchildren also survive.

Crypt side funeral services for Mr. William Earl Rowe will be conducted on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 3:00 pm in the Mausoleum of Oak Hill Cemetery. Reverend Gary Parrish will officiate. Friends may visit the family prior to the funeral at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Rowe.

Mrs. Mary Frances Vining, 93, of Jackson, formerly of Griffin, passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at her residence.

Mrs. Vining was born July 15, 1919. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Lee Collins and Hugh Vining.

Survivors include her brother, John Graddy of Colorado; nephews, Douglas Moore and his wife, Patsy of Jackson, Wayne Graddy of Griffin and Charles Street of Griffin; nieces, Jean Simpson, Jan Simpson, Jackie Simpson and Betty Jo Mattingly, all of Illinois; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Vivian Collins of Griffin; special great-great-niece, Aliza Westbury; and special caregivers, Melissa and daughters.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Frances Vining will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, in the chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home. Henry Collins will officiate.
