Volunteers in orange T-shirts were out at a hall on Poplar Street this week to help local veterans.

Associates from The Home Depot helped members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5448 fix up their meeting hall this week, as part of the store’s quarterly team build. Angela Johnson from the Griffin Home Depot said the volunteer associates came out as a community outreach to the VFW Post 5448 “to help the veterans, to make the place better for them.”

Daniel Ham, quartermaster for the post, said, “Home Depot really helped us out with our building that needed some fixing up.”

Ham said the building on Poplar Street was built in the 1930s.

“It’s been remodeled a few times, but this is the first major remodel in over 20 years,” he said. “It was due.”

Along with VFW Post 5448, it is also home to American Legion Post 15 and a Boy Scout troop. It is also used for events by other organizations including Navy SeaBees and Knights of Columbus.

The Home Depot Foundation, Ham said, “gave us a grant. They were generous enough to come out, provide materials and help install them. It’s been great all the way.”

The work included the replacement of light fixtures, new flooring, painting, remodeling the women’s bathroom and moving a wall to expand a room.

Johnson said there are team builds every quarter, usually with Habitat for Humanity, but the store reached out to the VFW. She said 22 associates from across the district came out this week to help.

“This is one of the biggest we’ve done,” Johnson said.
