Mr. James Sherman Gropper, 82, of Griffin, passed away Feb. 19, 2013, at his home.

He was a 28-year veteran of the United States Army. He served two tours in the Vietnam War, serving in the 97th Artillery Group/Alpha Battery, and retiring in 1985. He was a member of many war groups including the Tanson NHUT Association and had served as chaplain of the Dalton VFW for several years. He also enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Gropper.

He is survived by his daughter, Karin Hays of Sevierville, Tenn.; grandchildren and their spouses, Angi and Jody Pilkenton of Zebulon,

Coley Jones of Sevierville, Richard Jones of Hampton, Kami and Sebastian Jinx of Sevierville and William Hays of Sevierville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Richard Payton of Ohio; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor John Nance officiating. Friends may visit the family from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Moody-Daniel Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Priest Carter, 85, of Griffin, passed away Feb. 20, 2013, at Renaissance Care and Rehab.

Mrs. Carter was born on Oct. 27, 1927, in Jacksonville, Fla., daughter of the late Grandville and Zelma Adkins Priest. She was an avid fan of country music and Elvis. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Mount Gilead Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston H. Carter; and son, Keith Carter.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kimble and Helen Carter of Meansville; daughter-in-law, Deborah Carter of Hampton; sister and brother-in-law, Maylene and Ivan Ingman of Griffin; grandchildren, Brian Carter, Amanda and Travis Dial, Emily Carter, Ansley Carter, Andrew Carter; great-grandchildren, Layla Huggins, Camden Dial, Ella Dial; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with the Rev. Harvey Wilson officiating. Friends may visit the family from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, www.kidney.org, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Adams, 66, of Griffin, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at her residence. A private family service will be held at a later date. Mr. Eddie James Bowles, 60, of 320 Cove Road, Woodbury, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Woodbury Miracle Fellowship. Interment will follow in Walker’s Cemetery. Mr. Charles Aldine Ingram, 87, of Barnesville, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, in a Griffin health-care facility. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lamar Memory Gardens. Ms. Patricia A. Watkins, 58, of Crystal Brook, Griffin, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Spalding Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by McDowell’s Funeral Home Inc., 305 N. Hill St.

Funeral services for Mr. John Hook Orr will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Wings of Faith Holiness Church. Interment will be at Free Liberty UMC Cemetery.
