Spokeswoman Dabney Weems, with the Georgia Department of Corrections, said Wednesday that “the department could confirm that there was an inmate death yesterday at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison and has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the incident.”
On Tuesday another Department of Corrections spokeswoman, Gwendolyn Hogan, told the Jackson Progress-Argus that an inmate had been sent to an area hospital after an altercation Tuesday morning for treatment of injuries sustained in the altercation.
When asked about the inmate and incident, Weems said she “could not comment on a pending investigation” and referred questions about the incident to the GBI.
The Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison is on Georgia Highway 36 west of Jackson, near Interstate 75. It houses the state’s death row inmates.
