A handful of local football players are expected to sign today on national signing day, all from either Spalding High or Griffin High. Spalding High will have a signing ceremony at 1:30 p.m., while Griffin is slated to have its signing ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

Griffin has one player already enrolled in junior college, and two others who are expected to sign with NCAA Division II programs today in addition to two others who could sign down the road.

Bears defensive tackle Nhigel Phillips has already signed and is enrolled at Hines Community College in Mississippi. Expected to join him in the college ranks today are offensive lineman Keith Henley and return man/slotback Moses Mayes.

GHS safety Richard Wilder and offensive lineman Lander McCall are also generating some interest and could sign at a later date.

Across town, an expected five Jags might sign today at Spalding High. Head coach Nick Davis would not specify which players would sign or which schools were interested, though he did say one or two players were getting looks from Division II-level colleges and others would likely be junior college-level signees.

Elsewhere around town, Griffin Christian head coach Bobby Brogdon, Faith Christian Academy head coach Jim McClelland Jr., and Skipstone Academy head coach Dan Salvador each said they had no one being recruited in this year’s senior class.
