Police officers with the Griffin Police Department (GPD) responded to the intersection of North 9th Street and West Tinsley Street Saturday at about 12:15 a.m. in reference to a man down who appeared to have been shot.

When police arrived at the scene, they located 19-year-old Ivan Matthew Sierra, of 220 Kentucky Ave., in the roadway, dead of an apparent gunshot wound, according to a press release by the GPD.

Police have identified 18-year-old Javarious Leondre Verdell, of 725 Turner St., as the suspect in the shooting. As of Saturday afternoon, Verdell remained at large, though warrants for murder and additional charges have been issued for his arrest.

According to GPD Capt. Dwayne Jones, investigators believe that the shooting stemmed from a fight at a nearby party minutes earlier. Sierra’s body was found a short distance from the suspected party location.

Police suspect that both the victim and the suspect were at the same party but don’t have a motive yet, Jones said. Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy before releasing more information.
