The Griffin Christian Lady Crusaders put forth a valiant effort Thursday evening, but it wasn’t enough to stop their current losing streak.

The Lady Crusaders got within two points in the fourth quarter, but the LaGrange Academy Lady Warriors went on a 13-2 run and that propelled them to a 56-45 victory over GC in GISA Region 4-AA action at home. LaGrange Academy sweeps the season series between the teams.

The Lady Crusaders lost their 9th straight game to fall to 7-15 overall and 1-8 in region play.

The game was pretty close throughout, as LaGrange Academy only held leads of 17-10 after one quarter and 30-22 at the half. The Lady Crusaders started their comeback in the third quarter. Chelsey Deaton and Lily Hammond hit jumpers to cut LaGrange’s lead to 34-32 with 20 seconds left in the third and LaGrange led 36-32 heading into the final quarter.

GC trailed 37-32 before consecutive baskets by Mary Kate Blalock and Brittany Foster trimmed the LaGrange lead to 37-36 with 6:30 left in regulation and it looked like the Lady Crusaders would end their losing streak. But it wasn’t meant to be as LaGrange went on a 13-2 run — culminated by a deep 3-pointer by Leah Major — to lead 50-38 with less than 3:00 left. The Lady Warriors cruised after that for the win.

Tazia Garrett-Hemmett led LaGrange with 14 points, followed by Caithy Craft with 11. GC was led by Foster’s 18 points and 16 rebounds while Deaton chipped in 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals for the Lady Crusaders, who travel to play region foe Flint River Academy today at 6 p.m.
