Twelfth-year Griffin High Bears head coach Steve DeVoursney said he has one player who is already enrolled in junior college, two others who are getting looks from NCAA Division II-caliber schools and two others could end up at any one of several levels.
Griffin High’s Nhigel Phillips has already signed and is enrolled at Hines Community College in Mississippi.
“He’s already signed, sealed and delivered,” DeVoursney said of the Bears 330-pound defensive tackle.
Griffin High players getting looks from Division II-level schools include offensive lineman Keith Henley and return man/slotback Moses Mayes, according to DeVoursney. He said safety Richard Wilder and offensive lineman Lander McCall are also generating some interest, though he did not specify which schools when prompted.
In all, DeVoursney said he’ll likely only have two players, if that, who sign on national signing day.
Across town, second-year Spalding High head coach Nick Davis said the school has a ceremony planned for 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the gymnasium when as many as five Jags could sign. He would not specify which players nor which schools, though he did say one or two were getting looks from Division II-level schools and the others would likely be junior college-level signees.
Elsewhere around town, Griffin Christian head coach Bobby Brogdon and Faith Christian Academy head coach Jim McClelland Jr., said neither had anyone being recruited in this year’s senior class. Attempts to reach Skipstone Academy head coach Dan Salvador on Tuesday evening were unsuccessful.
