For the next four Saturdays in February, volunteers are needed to help clean up the Union Cemetery. From 8:30 a.m., until lunch, on Feb. 2, 9, 16 and 23, volunteers will be clearing out underbrush, overgrowth and debris from this local, church-owned cemetery.
The cemetery is overgrown with vines and trees, as well as several downed trees. Only a few of the headstones are visible from outside the fencing.
There will be some tools available, said City of Griffin Special Projects Coordinator Vicki Hyatt, but volunteers are asked if possible, to bring your own clippers, trimmers, mattocks, axes, shovels, wheelbarrows and any other lawn and yard tools you have.
“We will have supplies available to mark your tools,” Hyatt said.
Everyone must sign or have a signed waiver to participate in the clean up, she said, If under 18 years old, the waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian.
Union Cemetery is located on Grandview Drive at the intersection with Placid Road, across from Grandview Apartments. Hyatt asked that volunteers please park on the street, being careful not to block traffic.
