Walter Jones is the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce General Griffin for 2013.

Jones was also named the Citizen of the Year at Thursday’s annual awards banquet. He was selected for the honors for his efforts in the community including Boy Scouts, Rotary and the Chamber.

Jones, according to 2012 General Griffin Dave Lamb, was instrumental in the founding of local institutions that “help folks who need help in our community.”

He has worked behind the scene to start Midway Recovery Systems, Five Loaves Two Fishes Food Pantry and Hope Health Clinic, said United Bank’s Jim Ogletree, in his introduction of Jones. Five Loaves helped 33,000 people last year and Hope Health Clinic had 16,000 appointments last year.

United Bank sponsored the Outstanding Citizen Award.

“He’s helping anywhere he can,” Ogletree said of Jones, who he said was a friend and mentor as well as being “a faithful choir member at St. George’s.”

After being presented the General Griffin sabre and medallion by Lamb, Jones said, “we’ve got a lot of heavies in here,” referring to the city, county, civic and business leaders in at Thursday’s banquet. “I’d like us to not only recognize the new organizations with ribbon cuttings,” he said, “but those that have stayed here as well. I’d like to see us work both sides of the street.”
