With the loss, the Lady Bears fall to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in region play.
Griffin got off to a slow start in the first half and trailed the Lady Cards 28-17 at halftime. It was in the second half that Griffin turned up the pressure and climbed back in the game.
The Lady Bears went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter and cut the Jonesboro lead to 28-24, but a basket by Lady Cards forward Raven Wynn stopped the bleeding for the home team. Griffin again trimmed the lead, this time to 36-33, but that was as close as Griffin would get. Jonesboro took a 38-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Jones scored 10 of Griffin’s 16 points in the third.
Griffin guard Aurelia Mangham sank a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter and cut Jonesboro’s lead to 38-36. Griffin looked to seize the momentum, but Jonesboro had other ideas. They clamped down on Jones and forced other Lady Bears to make shots and they weren’t able to hit them.
Jonesboro went on a 7-0 run to take a 45-36 lead at the 5:48 mark of the fourth and keep Griffin at bay. Thanks to a few Griffin turnovers and Jonesboro inside baskets, the Lady Cards took a 13-point lead, 52-39, with a few minutes left and coasted to win the contest 53-48.
Ashton Elliott added 7 points for Griffin. Michelle Smith led Jonesboro with 16 points, followed by 13 from Kimberly Dawkins and 10 from Raven Wynn.
The Lady Bears travel to play Dutchtown in a non-region contest today at 5:30 p.m.
