Spalding High’s Shaquoria Reid (3) takes one to the basket in the finals of the Meriwether Holiday Tournament on Saturday at Greenville High School. Guarding on the play for Greenville is Lyric Hall (3). Spalding won 73-54 and Reid, had 16 points Saturday and a team-leading 11 in a 47-42 win Thursday against Manchester, was named Tournament MVP.
Joining Corbin, Reid and Cotton in double figures was Veronica Anderson with 10 in a game Class AAAA Spalding dominated Class A Greenville from the opening tip, leading 22-13 at the end of the first quarter, 46-21 at the half and 62-38 going into the fourth quarter.
“It was a real team effort,” said first-year Lady Jags head coach Chad Hubbard. “Our execution and the way we’re running the fast break has improved and we’re understanding the game better on defense.”
Kiyanna Johnson scored a game-high 33 points and Lyric Hall added 12 to lead Greenville (4-4) which lost its third in the last four games.
Reid hit double figures and Cotton and Jasmine Holland added 9 each to pace the Lady Jags in the tournament opener Thursday. Spalding led 13-4 at the end of the first, 21-18 at the half and 30-29 going into the fourth where it prevailed for its third win in a row as Class AA Manchester (then 1-5) lost its fifth in a row
Hubbard couldn’t be happier with how his team is playing heading into the second half of the season which gets under way Friday with Spalding traveling to take on Region 4-AAAA, Div. B first-place Riverdale (7-8 overall, 4-1 subregion) in a 6 p.m., tipoff.
“I’m really proud of our seniors — Veronica (Anderson), Grenishia (Daniel) and Shaquoria (Reid),” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting continued improvement out of Sierra (Kendall) off the bench and steady play out of Desiree (Corbin) and Twandalette (Cotton).”
The Lady Jags (8-4 overall, 2-2 subregion) are third in the subregion, behind second-place Griffin (6-6, 3-2) and first-place Riverdale but ahead of North Clayton (5-6, 3-3), Upson-Lee (2-8, 2-3) and Jonesboro (4-3, 1-2).
