As the calendar turned from November to December the focus in local sports shifted from the gridiron to the hardwood.
On Dec. 4, the Griffin High girls basketball team (1-3) topped Stockbridge 49-32 on the road to win its first game of the season. The same night, Shaquoria Reid scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Spalding High girls team (4-2) to 55-45 win at Eagle’s Landing in McDonough.
Later the same night, the Griffin High boys team (4-0) topped Stockbridge 69-67 to get off to its best start since the 2003-04 season. Also on the same night the Griffin Christian boys basketball team topped the Westfield School 62-49 to win its third straight.
On Dec. 7, the Griffin High girls basketball team took down visiting Dutchtown 46-44 for its second win in a row. The same night, the Spalding High boys team topped winless Woodland-Stockbridge 57-51 to snap a two-game losing streak.
On Dec. 11, the Griffin Christian girls basketball team got back on the winning track with a 44-32 win against visiting Furtah Prep. The Griffin Christian boys basketball rallied in the late game to also top Furtah Prep 77-75. The Spalding High boys team also won on the same night, topping Dutchtown 75-64. The Griffin High boys basketball team was also victorious, routing Locust Grove 62-39 to break a two-game losing streak.
On Dec. 13, the Griffin Christian basketball team swept visiting Grace Christian — the boys winning 65-61 behind 38 points from junior guard Will Savage and the girls winning 65-24 as they each notched their second win in a row.
On Dec. 14, Shacoria Jones scored 24 points as the Griffin High girls basketball team topped Eagle’s Landing 57-46 in McDonough to snap a two-game losing streak. Shaquoria Reid sank a 3-pointer with one second left to lift the Spalding High girls team past Walton High 44-43, while Griffin Christian’s girls team topped Dawson Street Christian 56-38 for its third win in a row. The same night the Spalding High boys team defeated Walton High 69-62 for its third in a row and the Griffin Christian boys team defeated Dawson Street 71-46 also for its third win in a row.
Also on the same day, the Spalding High girsl swim team finished first in a field of nine teams at a meet hosted by First Presbyterian Day School in Macon.
On Dec. 15, Griffin High swept visiting Lamar County — the Bears winning 61-44 and Lady Bears winning 60-49.
On Dec. 21, the All-Region 4-AAAA, Subregion B Team was released. Making the first team were: Spalding High linebacker Larry McCord, and Griffin High quarterback Jaquez Parks, running back Devontae Freeman, offensive lineman Lander McCall, wide receiver Trey Willis and defensive lineman Nhigel Phillips.
Those named to the second-team included: Spalding running back Brandon Thomas, offensive lineman Ontario Yancey, defensive lineman Devontez Carter, linebackers Jevaris Jones and Jake Jeffcoat, and defensive backs Anthony Bush and Rodney Jackson as well as kicker Jake Jeffcoat, and Griffin offensive lineman Quyleen Barham, wide receiver Quay Mangham, defensive lineman Ronquerris Davis, and linebackers Steven Welch and Telly Sloan as well as defensive back Richard Wilder.
Locals named honorable mention included: Spalding offensive lineman Zach Hammond, defensive lineman Tevarus Harris and defensive back Phillip Goodrum, and Griffin running back Justin Goddard, linebacker Nic Williams, defensive lineman Jonathan Frost, and wide receivers Christian Owens and Jordan Colbert as well as defensive backs Quantico Dodson and Montico Dodson.
The same day, the Griffin High boys basketball team opened the Lamar county Christmas Tournament with a 63-41 win over Pike County.
A day later, the Griffin High girls basketball team closed out the Lamar County Christmas Tournament with a 43-39 win against Upson-Lee. The same day, Shaquoria Reid scored 23 points to lea the Spalding High girls team past Newnan 61-45 as the Lady Jags won their second in a row.
On Dec. 27, Skipstone had three football players named to the Glory for Christ All-Star Team: Senior defensive end/tight end Rico Corbin, fellow senior linebacker/offensive lineman Josh Stewart and sophomore strong safety/running back Christian Stewart.
The same day, the Spalding High girls basketball team advanced to the finals of the Meriwether County Holiday Tournament with a 47-42 win against Manchester.
