The 2012 All-Region 4-AA Team was recently announced and the Trojans amassed a few of the top honors for the season they had, advancing all the way to the Class AA state semifinals before losing to eventual state finalist Calhoun, 21-14.
Region 4-AA Offensive Player of the Year went to Lamar junior running back Lawrence Austin and Co-Defensive Players of the Year were Lamar senior linebacker Trey Evans and junior defensive back Quay Searcy. Austin teamed with his twin brother Lance (the quarterback) to form a dynamic scoring duo -- prior to the Calhoun game, Lawrence rushed for 1,135 yards and scored 12 touchdowns in 2012.
Trojans first-year head coach Franklin Stephens nabbed Region 4-AA Coach of the Year for guiding his team to as high as a No. 2 state-ranking earlier in the season before finishing at No. 4.
“I’m proud that the coaches in our region recognized the players for all their work. I’m glad they saw what all our kids have done this year - they’ve really worked hard,” Stephens said. “To be recognized by the coaches brings a sense of pride to the program.”
Stephens was humbled to receive the Coach of the Year award.
“To be honest, the Coach of the Year is a staff award. My name may be attached to the award this year, but my coaching staff does a whole lot,” he said. “The sacrifice they make for their families and I’ve made for mine makes this truly a staff award. I’m very proud of my staff.”
Trojans who made the All-Region 4-AA First Team were: Junior kicker Tyler Scandrett, freshman long snapper Pippin Davis, junior athlete Lance Austin, senior defensive lineman Bo Dunn, senior linebacker Antwan Wallace and senior defensive back Sidarius Gotell.
All-Region 4-AA Second Team Trojans were: Sophomore offensive lineman James Bannister, senior running back Jeremy Fletcher, junior linebacker Ray Lyons and sophomore defensive lineman Alex Gardner.
