It didn’t work out that way for the road team.
The Golden Eagles bolted out of the gates quickly and Griffin couldn’t make shots, which led to a runaway 74-41 victory for ELHS Friday night in Region 4-AAAA crossover action.
Div. B Griffin falls to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in region play while Div. A foe EL improves to 6-2, 5-0.
Griffin actually started the game with the lead thanks to a technical foul due to an EL player dunking the ball in warmups.
Jaquez Parks made one of the two technical free throws for the quick 1-0 Griffin lead.
It was the only lead Griffin would enjoy in the game. EL ran off 8 quick points to lead 8-1 and the Golden Eagles didn’t look back.
Soon it was 12-3 EL and Golden Eagles guard Isaiah Dennis took over, converting a 3-point play and a vicious dunk at the end of the first-quarter to give EL the commanding 21-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
The iron was unkind to the Bears, as they missed nine shots in the first quarter (including four 3-pointers) and just couldn’t get into a rhythm. And offensive rebounding was out of the question for Griffin, as missed shots were grabbed by the taller Golden Eagles, who have four starters 6-foot-5 or taller, including 6-10 senior center Desmond Ringer, a South Carolina signee.
Griffin’s first basket in nearly 10 minutes came on a J.R. Ellis jumper at the 7:20 mark of the second quarter but by that time, the Bears were down 23-5 and the rout was on.
EL led 34-14 at the half and 53-28 entering the fourth quarter as the cold-shooting Bears were overmatched all game long. The Bears missed an unbelievable 37 shots in the game, including 1 of 17 from 3-point range.
Anforne’ Stroud led Griffin with 13 points (he made Griffin’s only trey) and Parks chipped in 8. Dennis led EL with 14 points, followed by 13 from Trevin Joseph off the bench and 12 from Chris Davenport. Ringer, playing his first game back from a knee injury, added 9 points and 12 rebounds.
Griffin 57, EL 46 (girls)
Shacoria Jones scored 24 points and made big plays in the fourth quarter to lead the Griffin Lady Bears to a 57-46 win over the Eagle’s Landing Lady Golden Eagles Friday evening in Region 4-AAAA crossover action on the road.
Griffin ends its two-game losing streak to improve to 3-5 overall, 3-2 in region play while EL drops to 1-5, 1-4.
Both teams played sloppily in the first half, but Griffin’s Ashton Elliott sank two 3-pointers and the Lady Bears held EL to 8 second-quarter points to take a 34-21 lead at the half.
Griffin led by as many as 16 in the second half, but EL made a nice comeback to get within 7 at 48-41 on a trey from Jessica Storr with 3:51 remaining in the fourth quarter. That’s when Jones took over for Griffin, hitting a knockdown jumper and converting a 3-point play to give the Lady Bears a 53-43 lead with 2:12 left. Griffin coasted from there to get the win.
