Jessie James Owens

Jessie James Owens departed this life on Dec. 7, 2012 at Spalding Regional Hospital.

He was born March 25, 1938 in Raleigh, Meriwether County, to the late Lizzie G. Owens and the late Bennie Owens Sr. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Alvenia Ridgeway Owens.

He was a 1957 graduate of Pike County Consolidated High School in Concord. After graduation, he moved to Dayton, Ohio and later joined the Marine Corps in 1959. While in the Marine Corps, he served his tour of duty in Vietnam. After leaving the Marine Corps in 1969, he returned home and was employed by the General Motors Corporation in Atlanta. He worked for General Motors until he retired on disability.

He leaves to cherish in loving memories, two daughters, Michelle Owens, of Locust Grove, and Cynthia Owens, of Alabama; one son, Tony (Tanya) Reid; one sister, Beaulah Owens of Griffin; two brothers, Bennie (Virdell) Owens and Eddie B. Owens, both of Griffin; one granddaughter, Sharri, of South Carolina; four nieces, Sherry (Carl) Trimble, Gwendolyn Thomas, Patrice (Jessie) Long, all of Griffin, and Suzette (Maurice) Stevenson, of San Antonio, Texas; two nephews, Virgenal (Kimberly) Owens and Benjamin (Michelle) Owens, both of Griffin; one aunt, Lizzie Horton, of South Carolina; one uncle, T.L. Owens, of Manchester, Ga.; and a host of cousins, family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Funeral for Mr. Jessie James Owens, of 840 Vaughn Road, Griffin, will be Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, Zebulon. Pastor R.L. Hodo, officiating and Pastor John Adams will render the eulogy. Interment will follow in Westwood Garden Cemetery. Public viewing will be held at the funeral home Friday from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. The cortege will assemble at noon from the residence.

Mrs. Florence Southern, age 78 of Griffin, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012.

Mrs. Southern was born in Brooks, Georgia on July 14, 1934. She is preceded in death by her parents, Grigue Lee Grant and Mamie Jewell Peeples Grant; husband, Charles Hubert Southern; granddaughter, Shannon McNeeley; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mamie Lee and Johnnie Hall, Doris and Ed Hamlett, brothers and sisters-in-law, William E. and Dewey Grant, Pete and Emma Grant, Junior Grant, Lloyd Grant, and James Grant.

Mrs. Southern was a member of First Assembly of Griffin.

Survivors include her daughter, Gail Southern and husband, David; son, Lee Southern and wife, Robin; grandchildren, Michael Southern, Amanda Southern, Cason Funderburk-Southern, Sonja McNeeley; great grandchild, Tristan Jarrett; sisters, Ruby G. Bunn, Dell G. Stallings, Orell G. McEachern; twin brother, Roy Floyd Grant and wife, Anne; sister-in-law, Joyce Grant; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mrs. Florence Southern was held Wednesday, December 12, 2012 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, December 13, at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Reverend Mike Freeman officiated. Interment followed in Griffin Memorial Gardens.
