With the win, the Div. B Bears improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in region play while struggling Locust Grove, out of Div. A, falls to 1-6, 0-4.
The Bears jumped on the Wildcats of Locust Grove early, sprinting to a 17-7 first-quarter lead and a 29-16 lead at the half. Heading into the fourth quarter, the overmatched Wildcats trailed 41-26. They were no match for Griffin’s pressure all night long and the Bears were able to break their two-game losing streak.
Rayshod Armstrong led Griffin with 20 points, followed by Kelvin Waldon with 8 and Shundarious Jordan with 7.
“We’re just trying to continually get better, especially with the healthy guys we have right now,” said Bears head coach Prelvis Paster, who said senior guard J.R. Ellis is having shoulder issues and is out for this weekend’s games. “If we can improve with the guys who are playing, we should be even stronger when the injured guys come back.”
The Bears have a big test ahead of them tonight at 8:30 p.m. as they face the state-ranked Eagle’s Landing Golden Eagles in region play at ELHS. The Golden Eagles have several players who are 6-foot-4 and taller, including senior center Desmond Ringer, who’s 6-foot-10. Ringer was hurt last week and didn’t play against Spalding, so he might be ready for Griffin.
“I told the guys that they play ball just like we do. There’s no need to be in awe of them,” Paster said. “If we come out and play like we’re capable of playing, I like our chances.”
Locust Grove 48, Griffin 43 (girls): Xandria Hosely had 19 points, 14 rebounds and 5 steals but it wasn’t enough as the Griffin Lady Bears fell to the Locust Grove Lady Wildcats 48-43 Tuesday evening in Region 4-AAAA crossover girls action at The House.
It was Locust Grove’s first region win of the year. LG is now 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the region while Griffin falls to 2-5, 2-2.
Shacoria Jones and Chelsea Prather chipped in 6 points each for Griffin, which travels to face struggling Eagle’s Landing High tonight at 7 p.m.
