Jessie James Owens

March 25, 1938—Dec. 7, 2012



Jessie James Owens departed this life on Dec. 7, 2012 at Spalding Regional Hospital.

He was born March 25, 1938 in Raleigh, Meriwether County, to the late Lizzie G. Owens and the late Bennie Owens Sr. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Alvenia Ridgeway Owens.

He was a 1957 graduate of Pike County Consolidated High School in Concord. After graduation, he moved to Dayton, Ohio and later joined the Marine Corps in 1959. While in the Marine Corps, he served his tour of duty in Vietnam. After leaving the Marine Corps in 1969, he returned home and was employed by the General Motors Corporation in Atlanta. He worked for General Motors until he retired on disability.

He leaves to cherish in loving memories, two daughters, Michelle Owens, of Locust Grove, and Cynthia Owens, of Alabama; one son, Tony (Tanya) Reid; one sister, Beaulah Owens of Griffin; two brothers, Bennie (Virdell) Owens and Eddie B. Owens, both of Griffin; one granddaughter, Sharri, of South Carolina; four nieces, Sherry (Carl) Trimble, Gwendolyn Thomas, Patrice (Jessie) Long, all of Griffin, and Suzette (Maurice) Stevenson, of San Antonio, Texas; two nephews, Virgenal (Kimberly) Owens and Benjamin (Michelle) Owens, both of Griffin; one aunt, Lizzie Horton, of South Carolina; one uncle, T.L. Owens, of Manchester, Ga.; and a host of cousins, family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Funeral for Mr. Jessie James Owens, of 840 Vaughn Road, Griffin, will be Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Hope Baptist Church, Zebulon. Pastor R.L. Hodo, officiating and Pastor John Adams will render the eulogy. Interment will follow in Westwood Garden Cemetery. Public viewing will be held at the funeral home Friday from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. The cortege will assemble at noon from the residence.

Grady C. Padgett Jr.

March 6, 1953—Died Dec. 10, 2012

Former Griffin resident



Grady C. Padgett Jr., 59, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born March 6, 1953 in Griffin, Georgia to Grady and Betty (Hancock) Padgett Sr. He was united in marriage on June 21, 1970 in Griffin to Cynthia Wynona Goodman.

Grady served his country in the United States Air Force. He was an Air Traffic Controller for FAA retiring in 2005 after 33 years of service. After retirement, Grady taught Air Traffic Control at Will Rogers until August of this year. During his employment with FAA he was a union representative, past president and mediator. He enjoyed computer video games, fishing, hunting, vegetable gardening and watching the Atlanta Falcons.

Grady is survived by his wife, Cynthia Padgett of the home; son, William “Billy” Brown of OKC; daughters, Christy Smith of Griffin, and Cindy Ann Richards and husband Gerald of Ansbach, Germany; sisters, Brenda Arlene Tufts and husband John of Hampton, Linda Floyd and husband Darrell of Hampton, Sue Ogletree and husband Greg of Griffin, and Shelia Slack of Locust Grove; and grandchildren, Steven, Elizabeth, Chelsea, Rhiannon and Marina.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Margaret Montgomery Fenner

June 15, 1942—Dec. 12, 2012



Margaret Montgomery Fenner, devoted wife, mother and proud grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec. 12, 2012 in Jupiter, Fla.

She was born in Macon on June 15, 1942 to Florine and James S. Montgomery and raised in Woodbury, Ga. until she was swept off her feet by her husband of 52 years, Ramon Carey Fenner. Margaret and Ray raised their family in Jackson, Ga. but spent their retirement years between Florida, Bahamas, and Ohio.

Margaret was preceded in death by her son Stephen Carey Fenner. She is survived by her husband Ray Fenner; daughters, Dare Cleare O’Reilly, Carey Latham, and Janet Benson; son-in-laws, David Latham, Rod Benson, and Kevin O’Reilly; grandchildren Brock and Luke Latham, Jesse, Natalie, Stephanie and Zachary Fenner, Victor Cleare, and Colin and Camilla Benson; sister and bother-in-law, Maridean and Richard Reynolds; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Diane Montgomery.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec.15, 2012 at Rock Springs Church in Milner and a graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 in Hillsboro. Ohio at the Hillsboro Cemetery by Turner Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Rock Springs Church, 219 Rock Springs Road, Milner, GA 30257.
