In the toughest stretch of their schedule, the Spalding High Lady Jaguars seem to be falling behind.

Spalding fell hard in a 68-44 defeat against Dutchtown High at home Tuesday night, coming up short in a Region 4-AAAA crossover game despite Desiree Corbin’s 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting.

Coming off a heart-wrenching 53-50 defeat at the hands of 7-1 Woodland-Stockbridge, Spalding (4-4 overall, 2-2 Region 4-AAAA Div. B) seemed out of sync defensively, allowing Dutchtown’s star senior guard Domonique Clune to score 30 points on an incredible 12 of 16 shooting. Div. A Dutchtown improves to 6-3 overall, 3-1 region.

Dutchtown’s deadly shooters, who were able to sink 6 treys, were the biggest problem for Spalding all evening long.

Spalding was never really in the game, as it trailed by double figures after every buzzer, but it gave its all in terms of hustle. Junior captain Twandalette Cotton, who averages just under 15 points per game, showed her dedication by chasing down and blocking a fast-break layup, twisting her ankle and continuing to play big minutes for the duration of the game.

The Lady Jags kept the game relatively close, not allowing the deficit to get beyond 10 points until just after the first half ended. However, they were outmatched in terms of size and shooting and that didn’t allow them to stay close to Dutchtown for the majority of the game.

Rounding out Spalding’s lead scorers were Cotton with 11 and Shaquoria Reid and Veronica Anderson with 7 each.

Spalding’s next game will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14 at Region 5-AAAAAA No. 2 ranked Walton.
