McDONOUGH — Cameron Johnson and Alex Bonner scored 9 points each to lead Spalding High in a 60-38 loss Tuesday night at Region 4-AAAA first-place Eagle's Landing High School.

It was the second loss in a row for Spalding (2-2 overall, 1-1 Region 4-AAAA) which suffered its first loss of the season, 88-68, to Class AAAAAA Walton 72 hours earlier. Eagle's Landing (4-0, 3-0), meanwhile, easily won its fourth in a row to remain atop the region standings by a half game over Jonesboro (3-1, 2-0).

Both Eagle's Landing and Jonesboro played in the state semifinals last year, Jonesboro in Class AAAA and ELHS in Class AAA.

Size was the biggest factor Tuesday night. Operating at a huge size disadvantage, Spalding could only watch as the Golden Eagle's two tallest players who dressed out — 6-foot-8 Jordan Sessions and 6-foot-7 Chris Davenport — scored 11 and 8 points, respectively.

It could have been worse for Spalding which doesn't have any starters over 6-foot-4. ELHS's tallest player, 6-foot-10 center Desmond Ringer, who is nursing a tweaked knee, did not dress out.

Regardless, Spalding had no answer throughout the night as Eagle's Landing dominated to lead 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, 27-17 at the half and 44-27 heading into the fourth quarter where Golden Eagle's head coach Clay Crump liberally substituted to not only get his bench playing time but to also save the legs of his top players for the tournament his team is headed to Friday in Memphis, Tenn.

Rounding out Spalding's leading scorers were Terence Brittian and JeQuarrian Berry with 7 and 6 points, respectively. No one else on Spalding scored more than four points. ELHS, meanwhile, had 10 players score four or more points led by Jordan Session (11) and Bradley Dewberry (10) in double figures.

Spalding continues its season with region games at home against Woodland-Stockbridge (0-5, 0-1) on Friday and Dutchtown (0-3, 0-2) on Tuesday.
