STOCKBRIDGE — The Griffin High Lady Bears basketball team won its first game of the 2012-13 season Tuesday evening, defeating the Stockbridge High Lady Tigers 49-32 in Region 4-AAAA crossover action at Stockbridge High.

Griffin (Division B) ended its three-game losing streak to improve to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in region play while Stockbridge (Div. A) remains winless on the season at 0-4, 0-2.

Both teams started the game very sluggish, committing several turnovers and missing shots. Stockbridge led 8-7 after the first quarter in a sloppy exhibition of basketball. The teams played a bit better in the second quarter, with the Lady Tigers racing to a four-point lead at 17-13 with 1:23 before halftime.

Griffin then turned up the defensive pressure and Stockbridge had a hard time getting into a rhythm. The Lady Bears went on a 7-1 run to close out the second quarter and took a 20-18 lead at the half. The Lady Bears’ run continued at the start of the third as they outscored Stockbridge 6-0 to take a 26-18 lead and they didn’t look back. Griffin outscored the Lady Tigers 16-5 in the quarter and took a 36-23 lead into the final stanza.

The Lady Bears made a few shots in the fourth and also sank 9 of 14 free throws in the quarter to easily run away with the contest. Aurelia Mangham of Griffin led all scorers with 11 points, with Shacoria Jones and Alexis Roberts chipping in 8 points each. Roberts led the Lady Bears with 8 rebounds. Chyita Brown led Stockbridge with 10 points.

Griffin looks to keep the wins coming as it hosts region foe Dutchtown Friday at 6 p.m. Dutchtown swept the Lady Bears last season.
