• Special thanks to Post 15 of the American Legion for putting together the Veterans Day ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial Park across from the library on Sunday. Also a big thanks to Ron Alexander at Candler Field and all the folks that worked so hard to make the Veterans Day celebration on Saturday so meaningful. Veterans and their families appreciate being thanked once in a while.

• If you think that Christmas is too commercialized, stop buying so much stuff.

• I can’t believe the city, county and board of education are going to raise the tax rates. Times are hard enough as it is without them raising our taxes.

• I would love to see the Georgia Bulldogs play for the national championship, especially against Notre Dame.

• It’s such a sad day to see Hostess shut down. What will we do without Twinkies?

• Would someone out there please respond to this. Why do old people 60-70 years old have to pay school taxes? We’ve already raised our children and put them through school. Now we are just barely scraping by on what little Social Security we get, so why in the world do we pay school taxes?

• Thank goodness Mitt Romney didn’t win. Barack Obama is the greatest president we have ever had. He really cares about poor people and the needy and the working man.

• My favorite part of the GDN now is the TV Week.

• It’s ridiculous that taxes are going up.

• I am glad my life doesn’t revolve around college football. Some of these people need to get a life.

Homeowners 65-69 years of age, regardless of income, are eligible for an exemption of $10,000 in value from the school portion of the taxes

Homeowners 70-74 years of age, regardless of income, are eligible for an exemption of $20,000 in value from the school portion of the taxes.

Homeowners 75 years of age and above, regardless of income, are eligible for an exemption of $30,000, in value from the school portion of the taxes.

There are also some other exemptions that you can check on at the Spalding County Tax Website to see if you qualify. Hope this helps someone.

To the person who asked the question..."Why do old people 60-70 years old have to pay school taxes?" I am going to respond with another question..."Why do young people 30-40 years old have to pay social security taxes?" Social Security will not be around when I am 60-70 years old. You "old people" have already had your opportunity to save for retirement. Now I am just barely scraping by on what little monies I earn, so why in the world do I need to supplement retirement? I will glady pay your portion of the school tax, if you cover my social security tax. Sound like a plan?

To the person who ask..."Why do old people 60-70 years old have to pay school taxes?" I will respond with another question...Why do young people 30-40 years old have to pay social security? It clearly is not going to be around when I am "old". You "old people" have already had your opportunity to save for retirement. I am just barely scraping by on what little money I earn...so why should I have to help fund YOUR retirement?
