The Tigers committed 36 turnovers and missed 17 free throws to end up falling to Darton College 77-74 in overtime, dropping them to 0-7 on the year.
“We played a bad first half, but we showed some poise and came back to send the game to overtime. We just missed too many free throws and had way too many turnovers,” said Tigers first-year head coach Calvin Sinkfield. “We’ve got to start playing better fundamental basketball.”
Southern Crescent fell behind 43-31 at the half, but listened to Sinkfield’s instructions to make a valiant second-half comeback. They pressed Darton and caused turnovers, climbing back into the contest. The Tigers tied the game at 67-all and had the ball with 8.9 seconds left, but in typical Tigers fashion Saturday, they committed a turnover and didn’t get a chance to sink a possible game-winning shot.
In the overtime period, SCTC committed 6 turnovers and missed 4 free throws and Darton took advantage and squeezed out the win.
“I see some progress in the guys, but we’ve got to be mentally tougher than that,” Sinkfield said.
Ignacio Hood led SCTC with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals off the bench. Vladimir Noel added 13 points and 9 rebounds, Rodderick “Perk” Staggers had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals and Trae Critten chipped in 7 points, 10 assists and 3 steals for the Tigers.
The SCTC men get back into action Thursday at Brewton-Parker at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at home against Waycross at 7 p.m.
