ATLANTA — The Spalding High Lady Jaguars basketball team got the Chad Hubbard era off to a good start this past weekend, splitting a pair of tournament games.

The Lady Jags participated in the BTW Thanksgiving Tournament held at Booker T. Washington High Friday and Saturday, losing on Friday before getting a win for first-year head coach Hubbard on Saturday.

The Lady Jags lost to South Atlanta 57-52 on Friday before beating new school Coretta Scott King High 58-24 on Saturday.

“I’m proud of the girls. They played hard on both nights and we got through the tourney with a win so that’s really good,” said Hubbard, who coached at Washington from 2006-08. “I’m hopeful we’ll keep this up all year.”

Twandalette Cotton led Spalding with 17 points and 7 rebounds against South Atlanta Friday. Veronica Anderson chipped in 14 points and Desiree Corbin added 12 rebounds in that contest. On Saturday, Corbin led the way for Spalding with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Cotton added 18 points and 6 rebounds and Shaquoria Reid chipped in 10 against Coretta Scott King, a new school in the Bankhead community of Atlanta.

The next game for Spalding (1-1) will be on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Jackson High at 6 p.m. The Lady Jags’ home opener is Nov. 27 against Locust Grove at 6 p.m.
