What a difference a year makes — GC lost to Weber 30-23 in last year’s season opener and was eventually swept by the Lady Rams, losing the second game 26-24 in overtime. On Tuesday, the return of Brittany Foster helped Griffin Christian (1-0) spurt to 33 first-half points and build a sizable lead over Weber. The Lady Crusaders had a rough third quarter, committing several turnovers and not scoring much in the period. They fared better in the fourth, playing strong defense and getting late baskets from Katy Hammond, Abby Bankston, Brittany Brogdon, Chelsey Deaton and senior Hannah Branham to seal the home victory.
The Lady Crusaders, which went 2-21 last year, won their season-opening game for the first time since they started GISA play in 2006. The Lady Rams drop to 0-2 this season.
Foster, who didn’t play basketball last season to concentrate more on volleyball, led the way for the Lady Crusaders with 15 points. The senior also added four rebounds, two blocks and two steals against Weber.
Hammond added 10 points and seven assists, Brogdon and Deaton chipped in six points each and senior Leyah Brown had three deflections for the Lady Crusaders. Brogdon led GC with eight rebounds and Deaton led the team with four steals.
“It feels good to start the season with a win. I hope it leads to better results for us this season,” said Lady Crusaders head coach David Hammond.
GC will try to try to start a win streak when it travels to Macon Friday to face Central Fellowship at 6 p.m.
