The Class AAAA varsity boys will start at 8:30 a.m. while the varsity girls will start at 9 a.m.
“I’m excited for both teams at the state meet. They worked hard all year and they both did very well at the region meet,” said Spalding head coach Dolores Owen. “If they can give it all they’ve got and run with heart, that’s all I can ask for.”
One thing Owen will have to ask for is other Jags runners to step up on Saturday. Three of her boys team members have been beset by injuries since the region meet: Evan Davis twisted his ankle playing club soccer last weekend and he won’t run at the state meet, Christian Gray bruised his hip and just started running again Wednesday and Jonathan Mitchell is having back problems.
“It’s unfortunate some of the guys are hurting, but that just means other guys will have to step up at state,” Owen said. “I still think we will be fine. If we can finish in the top 20, I will be pleased.”
The Lady Jags team is pretty healthy at this time, with the only exception being junior Li Anne Harris’ leg. Harris ran well at the region meet despite the injury and Owen believes she’ll be okay for state. Blair Dunaway, Stephanie Estrada and McKenzie Dallas all are feeling better so Owen is feeling great about how the Lady Jags can perform at the state meet. She even feels a couple of other girls should step up and run well this weekend: Grenishia Daniel and Emma Johnston.
“I’m impressed with Emma; she has improved over the last four meets and she even set a personal record at the region meet,” Owen said. “And Grenishia also set a personal record at region; she always steps it up when the team needs her. I’m really proud of their efforts this season.”
Owen said the Lady Jags should finish in the top 15 at state, if everyone runs to their potential.
