The city of Orchard Hill already allows both packages sales and on premise consumption or by the drink sales Monday through Saturday for beer, wine and liquor. Tuesday’s vote will permit those sales on Sundays as well, from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Those times were set by the state law which allowed communities to put the question to voters on Sunday sales. Griffin and Spalding County already allow both package and by the drink sales on Sunday.
There are 120 registered voters in the city of Orchard Hill, with 65.8 percent voting on this measure. It passed, 58.67 percent to 31.33 percent with 44 voters in favor and 31 opposed.
Countywide, voter turnout was about 68 percent with 24,225 out of about 35,670 registered voters participating.
Spalding County voters overall went for Mitt Romney, 14,276 votes or 59.07 percent to 9.576 votes or 39.62 percent for President Barack Obama. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson had 262 or 1.08 percent of Spalding County votes.
Countywide totals include all votes except about 1,000 paper ballots cast, which had not been counted at press time.
Incumbent District 3 Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, was unopposed on the ballot but did have an official write-in challenger, David Ferguson, who had campaigned as the Socialist Workers Party candidate. There were 281 write-in votes cast, but not all were for Ferguson.
Westmoreland won with 17,653 votes or 98.43 percent of vote in Spalding County.
Spalding County voters also voted for the charter schools amendment, which had opposition from the local NAACP and local school officials who wrote letters in this paper and spoke out against the proposal. In Spalding, votes were 13,746 or 61.98 percent for and 8,432 or 38.02 percent against.
The other constitutional amendment, allowing the state to enter into multi-year real estate leases also passed with a similar percentage, 13,424 yes to 8,236 no.
