Number of school system employees down 4 percent

According to a news release by the Griffin-Spalding County School System, the number of employees for the local school system has declined by four percent from 1,512 last year to 1,455 this year. The school system attributes this reduction to budget shortfalls caused by decreasing state and local revenues.

“The decrease in employees has overwhelmingly occurred through attrition,” said Director of Human Resources Stephanie Dobbins. “Almost half of the 68 employees who completed our exit survey were retiring.”

The number of administrators has decreased the most and is down by eight percent, according to the release. Likewise, the school system now has five percent fewer teachers and two percent fewer support staff members.

Give us numbers please. 8% represents how many administrative positions, and what were they? 5% represents how many teaching positions? This information is misleading and seems to be an attempt to make it look like the system is cutting back on administration more than on teachers. If you want to give us percentages, how about the percentage of the budget that is spent on central administration (including office staff). I believe the recommendation nationwide is 5-6%. I'll bet Griffin-Spalding is 15% or higher.

I wonder if the numbers in the central office have gone down as well. Clearly if we have less teachers, less support staff, and less administrators, and a tight budget, central office should not be hiring.
