The program that day begins at 9 a.m. with the recreation of a military-style breakfast, and later a military-style lunch, in an open-air mess tent. Throughout the day, authentic military aircraft will be on display at the Candler Field Museum — a non-profit organization dedicated to recreating the Atlanta Airport as it was in the 1920s.
The official program starts at 1 p.m. and focuses on the recognition of veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A 21-gun salute will honor those veterans.
“We want to publicly commemorate the contributions of living veterans and remember the sacrifices of those who died,” said Candler Field Museum director and Vietnam War veteran Ron Alexander. “Of particular interest, we want to support the families of those who are currently serving from our region.”
The Honor Our Veterans Day will feature two guest speakers. Ret. Lt. General William R. Helmly, commanding general of the United States Army Reserve, will speak about his command experience between 2002 and 2006. And Helen Denton, a World War II Women’s Army Corps veteran, will tell the audience about her experience as a member of General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s staff, as she typed up the D-Day invasion plans for the president.
Other highlights of the family-oriented Nov. 10 event will include a flyby provided by the U.S. Air Force and a live parachuter who will fly in with a United States flag, followed by an official flag folding ceremony. The Missing Man Formation, flown by PT-17 Stearman trainers, will also be part of the program.
Visitors will further see a performance by the Griffin High School JROTC drill team as well as patriotic music by the Air Force Reserve Band’s Brass Quintet Ensemble from Robbins Air Force Base.
The Barnstormers Grill, which is located at the museum, will be open for lunch and dinner that day except during the main program at 1:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the Honor Our Veterans Day on Nov. 10, as there is no admission or parking fee for the event.
