Lamar County 39, Bleckley County 7: BARNESVILLE — The Class AA No. 4 state-ranked Lamar County Trojans got big plays from several players besides the Austin twins to defeat then-No. 10 Bleckley County 39-7 last Friday night in Region 4-AA action at home.
Lamar won the 200th game in school history, remaining undefeated at 7-0-1 overall and 5-0 in the region while the Bleckley County Royals fell to 6-2, 4-1 and suffered their first region loss.
The Austin twins, Lance and Lawrence, played their usual stellar games (both combined for the 5 touchdowns Lamar scored), but it was big plays by their teammates which helped the Trojans win. After Lance’s TD run and a Tyler Scandrett field goal put Lamar up 10-0, Bleckley scored on a 22-yard TD pass to cut the Trojans’ lead to 10-7. That’s when the barrage of big plays for Lamar began and the Royals were shut out after that.
Alex Gardner’s blocked punt deep in Bleckley territory led to a 1-yard TD run by Lance to give Lamar the 17-7 lead at halftime. Antwan Wallace’s fumble recovery led to a Scandrett field goal and Quay Searcy’s interception led to a 32-yard TD pass from Lance to Lawrence and Lamar led 27-7 in the third. A fumble recovery by Ray Lyons led to a Lance TD run and Lawrence scored minutes later for the final 39-7 margin.
Lamar travels to Montezuma, Ga. Friday to face the Macon County Bulldogs (3-5, 3-2) in region action at 7:30 p.m.
