A total of 20 contestants will be cooking chili that day, judged by five anonymous judges for an overall award as well as the visitors for the People’s Choice award. Musical entertainment will be provided by The Crossroads Band and Friends, a group that has been playing for the Griffin Humane Society’s chili cook-off for many years.
The event is a fundraiser for the local humane society — an all-volunteer group that has been around for 29 years.
“Anything we make, we’ll be happy with,” said Debbie Yelvington, president and one of the founders of the Griffin Humane Society. “We do the best we can with what we can get.”
Yelvington said this year’s chili cook-off is dedicated to former Griffin Mayor Cecil Davis, who used to foster dogs at the local humane society and donate to the organization with his wife.
The event will not include animals for adoption, and those who want to bring their dogs need to keep them on a leash, she said.
Asked why it is important to support the Griffin Humane Society through the cook-off fundraiser, Yelvington said the group serves as an advocate for those animals who may otherwise have no advocate.
“We tend to help those who cannot help themselves. We take care of them,” she said, adding that she encourages people to spay or neuter their animals.
