No. 3 state-ranked GC improves to 24-2 overall, defeating Oak Mountain 25-23, 25-13, 25-7.
“We won the first match on determination; the next two matches we won with consistent serves,” said GC coach Charles Stephens.
GC only had one match last week during fall break and that led to the team’s shaky start in Game 1.
“We struggled a bit in Game 1 since we hadn’t played in a week,” said GC coach Melanie Foster. “We were down for a while but we fought back to win the game and roll from there.”
Indeed they did. Brittany Foster served 6 straight points in Games 2 & 3 to keep GC out in front and she had several kill shots as well. Cara Grobbelaar, Madison Bertelsbeck, Leyah Brown and Mary Kate Blalock played really well and helped the Lady Crusaders cruise in Game 2. Blalock served 10 straight points to close out Game 3 and win the match.
The Lady Crusaders travel to Douglasville Thursday to play their final regular-season match at No. 4 Heirway Christian at 6 p.m. GC will host a first-round state playoff match Monday at 5 p.m. against the No. 4 seed from GISA Region 1.
