Skipstone lost its second straight game to fall to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the GFC East while East Atlanta improves to 6-2, 2-2. With the loss, Skipstone is eliminated from playoff contention; the only consolation is that it can play spoiler to East foe Augusta Prep next week. East Atlanta just about clinched the final playoff spot in the East.
Skipstone came out on fire defensively, forcing the Mustangs to turn the ball over on downs on their first two possessions. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the offense sputtered thanks to two consecutive fumbles. East Atlanta capitalized off the second fumble, getting a 7-yard TD run from Daniel Compton to give the Mustangs the 7-0 lead at the 2:01 mark of the first quarter.
The Warriors came right back, embarking on a 6-play, 43-yard drive which culminated in a 7-yard TD run from Jamiro Winston to tie the game at 7-all. Winston finished with 16 carries for 104 yards and the TD.
Skipstone had a chance to take the lead late in the third quarter, but Skipstone quarterback Alex Snider threw a pass in the red zone that was tipped and intercepted by East Atlanta’s Khadyle Curry.
Skipstone had another chance to score with 3:50 left in the fourth, recovering a fumble from Mustang back Orande Barrow, but the Warriors couldn’t capitalize.
East Atlanta then went on the game-winning drive, getting big a big fourth-down run from Barrow and a first-down run from Justin Glover to set up the final TD pass, which Ard completed to Ferguson in the back of the end zone to break the tie.
Skipstone had a chance to win the game with seconds left in regulation thanks to a roughing the passer penalty that put it on the Mustangs 26, but the Warriors’ last-ditch efforts were unsuccessful.
Skipstone travels to play GFC East foe Augusta Prep Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
