No. 3 seed Spalding (12-11) will have to shake off the effects of a 3-hour bus ride, then play good defense and pitch well to defeat No. 2 seed Worth County (11-21 regular season) today.
“If we throw strikes and play defense well, we have a chance to win this series,” said Lady Jags head coach Rusty Hudson. “We’ve been doing that down the stretch and I hope it continues against Worth County.”
The Lady Jags have been on a proverbial roll since the 7-2 win over crosstown rival Griffin on Sept. 18 — they’ve won 7 of their last 9 games, including 3 wins in the Region 4-AAAA Tournament. Hudson said the roll actually started before the Griffin win.
“To be honest, we started playing better when we hosted Woodland-Stockbridge on Sept. 11. We lost the game 7-1, but Lora [Rape] threw strikes and we played good defense in that game except for one inning,” he said. “I think the light came on for us after that. The girls realized that if they listen to what we coaches have told them, they can win. If our pitchers throw strikes, our defense will be better and that gives us a better chance to win, which we’ve done down the stretch.”
