There is a problem with loose dogs

To the Editor:

Just venting about all the challenging loose dogs in town. I walk my dog daily in the Third Ward area anywhere from the Third Ward Park down to Grape Creek at Springer. And there are many of us out there doing the same, getting good exercise and de-stressing via dog outings, but it’s getting pretty scary when the loose dogs approach and/or come after you. Not to mention that there doesn’t seem to be much of a spay/neuter awareness here so all the male dogs are “intact” and quite ferocious.

Yes, a few yards have electric fences and I’ve learned that those dogs aren’t coming after us, but the others make me turn around instantly and quickly get out of there fearing for my safety and my dogs. Do we have a leash law? Can we raise awareness about following it? Can neighbors with salty old boys lying in the front yard please prevent them from chasing us and challenging an otherwise peaceful and much awaited daily outing in the neighborhood?

And it goes without saying, that I’m a dog owner who picks up the poop and appreciates the plentiful dog baggy stations around town. My issues are with the milk chocolate lab on Finley Street, the chow in the four-pack of dogs on Springer, the white-chested black lab on McLaurin, all of whom are loose and will not let you pass.
