Idle this week, the Nick Davis-coached Spalding High football team was busy brushing up for next week’s Region 4-AAAA crossover game at Locust Grove.

“We’re just trying to correct the mistakes we made in the first two games of the season on offense, defense and special teams,” the second-year Jags head coach said of a 3-3 tie in the season opener two weeks ago against then Class AA No. 2-state ranked Lamar County and a 20-13 win last week at Rutland.

Toward that end, Spalding will scout the Clint Satterfield-coached Wildcats (1-1) at home tonight against the Morrow Mustangs (1-1).

Next week’s game is the first road game of the season for Spalding which is off to its first undefeated start through two games since 2007. Next week’s game comes against an opponent Spalding lost to 23-17 in overtime last year in the final game of a 2-8 season.

“The biggest thing is letting guys who are banged up heal up a little bit and get ready for next week’s game,” said Davis, whose team has been without two of its three quarterbacks at one point or another the past two weeks.

First Monquez Sullivan (broken ankle) was injured during a practice the week of the season opener. Then Powell Krepps (hip pointer), who played the entire season opener as well as the first half last week, did not play the second half against the Hurricanes after getting injured.

Trae Moran came in and finished against the Hurricanes.

Davis expects Krepps, who was held out of practice this week, to be back. He also hopes by next week Sullivan’s ankle has come far enough along for him to play, too.

“We’ll have to see how he looks,” said Davis, whose team has had packages in place since the summer to highlight the strength of all three quarterbacks.

After struggling in the season opener, Spalding’s offense posted two scores against Rutland. The first, set up on an interception by Anthony Bush, culminated on a 24-yard pass from Krepps to Bush three plays later. The other came on a 77-yard run by Brandon Thomas. In-between the Jags dented the scoreboard on a 46-yard interception return by Garrett Bell.

Spalding’s offense used this week to work on better execution and cut down penalties, said Davis.

The defense worked on keeping teams out of the end zone, while special teams focused on the fundamentals and open-field tackling, he added.

“We’re always working to get better — if you do the same thing, you’ll stay the same,” said Davis. “We’re nowhere close to where we need to be coming into the region or going into the playoffs — we don’t have any bragging rights toward that end. That’s what we’re stressing to our kids.”

Spalding (1-0-1) follows next week’s game at Locust Grove by coming home to take on Dutchtown (1-1) in another Region 4-AAAA crossover game before traveling to Upson-Lee (0-2) to take on the Knights in the Region 4-AAAA Div B opener.

Davis said his team is in no position to glance ahead.

“We just have to take it one game at a time and stay focus on our next opponent,” he said. “When you start looking ahead, you have a slip-up and a surprise somewhere (and then lose). We’re hoping to stay focused and maybe surprise someone.”
