“It will be held Oct. 6-7,” he said.
Usually held during the summer, the tournament was moved to the fall this year because the greens were being replanted with Champion Bermuda hybrid grass.
“We have new Champion Bermuda greens and we’re looking forward to a great City Championship this year,” said King. “I think everybody is going to be really surprised with the new greens.”
Henry Mabbett Jr. (67-68—135) is the defending champ. Mabbett birdied three of the final four holes last year to force a sudden-death playoff which he won on the first hole against former Spalding High teammate Davin White to become the tournament’s eighth consecutive first-time winner.
The past eight winner include: Mabbett, 2010 champ Corey Dinkins (75-72—147), 2009 champ Joey Tinsley (70-74—144), 2008 champ Lee Brannon (76-70—146), 2007 champ Ken Pullin (67-73—140), 2006 champ Rock Hutcheson (69-73—142), 2005 champ Adam Rogers (71-73—144) and 2004 champ Josh Woods (73-74—147).
The tournament’s last two-time winner is Chris Rivers. Rivers won the 2000 (71-76—147) and 2003 (69-75—144) championships.
“Next year we’ll revert back to the August date,” King said of the championship’s usual place on the calendar.

GRIFFIN CITY ON GOLF CHANNEL:
At the same time the Griffin City Golf Course opened its newly planted greens for play last month, there was also another change taking place off the course.
Totally unrelated to the timing of the new greens being reopened, Griffin City golf pro Charlie King struck a deal with the Golf Channel to have the course listed on its tee time web site (www.golfnow.com).
“They just happened to call me around the same time,” said King.
It now means players can book tee times at the Griffin City Golf Course in one of three ways: going to www.golfnow.com, going to www.cityofgriffin.com or by phoning the pro shop (770) 229-6615.
