One of the reasons for Salvador’s optimism is the fact that Skipstone beat N. Georgia last season on the road by the score of 18-13. The Falcons are coming off a 22-21 loss to Anderson last week.
“North Georgia runs the option and they have a good quarterback who can also throw the ball,” Salvador said. “We’re going to change up a few things to try and combat that.”
One thing the Warriors will do is have strong safety Christian Salvador, who will also start at quarterback, line up in the front to help with the option.
“Christian Salvador’s primary role will be to stick with the quarterback at all times,” coach Salvador said. “We don’t want him getting to the outside.”
Skipstone junior tailback Jamiro Winston returns to the lineup tonight and hopefully he can have the performance he had last season, when he scored 3 touchdowns against the Falcons. Sophomore tailback Christian Stewart and senior tailback Anthony Peavy will also see time in the backfield in tonight’s game.
Coach Salvador said the team will run the double wing offense with his son at QB and since he has thrown TDs in games, the Warriors head coach believes things will run smoothly.
On defense, Skipstone’s best defender Rico Corbin sprained his MCL in his knee and will be out for a while. Warriors senior middle linebacker and fullback Dave Quashi believes his team will pick up the slack for Corbin and get their first win of the season.
“We’re going to play some good ball Friday. We are prepared and if everyone’s head is on straight, we should win,” Quashi said. “We have started rough because we’re new people coming together and we’ve got to trust each other. I believe we are doing that.”
Griffin Christian (1-1) at Loganville Christian (2-0):
The Griffin Christian Crusaders hit a snag last week, falling to Dominion Christian 53-32 for their first loss of the season. Now they will have to try to get back on the winning track tonight in non-league action at Loganville Christian at 7:30 p.m.
Loganville is 2-0 and has been outscoring opponents by a bunch so far this season and the Crusaders will have to be wary of the Loganville passing attack.
“They throw the ball a lot and that’s probably why they’re scoring in bunches,” Crusaders head coach Bobby Brogdon said. “If we shut that down, we should be okay.”
Hopefully helping to shut the passing game down will be the return of senior Michael White to the Crusaders. White has played well at cornerback and wide receiver in the past and Brogdon believes having him back there will help solidify the defense. Matt Moore and Dewald Grobbelaar will be the inside linebackers and Dillan Brogdon and Bryce Landers will be the outside linebackers for tonight’s game.
“We will play a 4-3 defense and some Cover 2 as well,” Brogdon said. “We most likely will run some man-to-man in the game.”
On offense, the Crusaders will receive another backfield weapon as junior tailback Sean Montgomery is back from his recent surgery. Brogdon will rotate his son Dillan and cornerback Taylor Dunn at the QB position and he said they plan to do a lot more passing tonight.
“My guys should be ready for the game,” said coach Brogdon.
Faith Christian Academy (0-1) at King’s Way Christian:
Faith Christian Academy gets back into action after a week off, heading to Douglasville for a road contest at King’s Way Christian School tonight at 7:30 p.m.
The King’s Way Crusaders scored nearly 80 points per game last season en route to winning their league championship for the second straight year in 2011.
“Our goal against King’s Way is to slow the game down - we definitely don’t want them scoring 80 points on us,” said FCA Lions coach Jim McClelland Jr. “Nick Preston, our quarterback, will have the freedom to check off if he sees something he doesn’t like.”
McClelland said the guys are learning his offensive packages and he hopes they will execute everything as well as they can tonight. One addition to the team who should help them execute tonight will be 6-foot-5 lineman/linebacker Marcus Gilbert. McClelland said Gilbert has practiced well this week and he’s ready to go.
