County, city get update on tax appeals

The Spalding County and City of Griffin boards of commissioners got an explanation Tuesday of property taxes and how and why valuations have changed.

Larry Griggers, a revaluation consultant and former state Department of Revenue manager, was hired by the county in 2007 after the county was cited by the state because property values were below market value. Griggers explained the state cited the county again in 2008, but waived the fine and approved the tax digest if the county would complete a countywide revaluation by 2010.

The last one was done in 1964, he said, and over time the assessors just updated that until changing over in 2001 to statewide assessment software. But the data was so different from the old system that values were not coming up correctly and the assessors were having to do manual overrides.

So what they aren't saying is how they came up with the numbers. I have went down there 3 times and the guy with the lighter colored hair evaded every question I asked the first time and just got a we'll call you every other time. The depreciation value for 1 is way off. another problem is they counted every sq ft as heated living space. My tax went up more than 140%. These guy just draw the numbers from the air???
