When police officers arrived at the residence, they made contact with a 55-year-old female, who stated that a group of black males was walking by her house and shouting at her as they walked by.
According to a GPD incident report, police began looking for the group after the female pointed out the direction in which the group had walked. When officers crossed Second Street, they noticed the group in the 500 block of Tinsley Street.
As officers approached, one of the suspects reportedly ran to the edge of the wood line and appeared to throw something into the woods. Police asked the suspect — who was identified as 18-year-old Octavious Mayes, of Griffin — what he had dumped into the woods, to which Mayes replied he didn’t do anything.
Police officer then started searching the wood line, and only seconds later, they discovered a .38 revolver lying in the grass.
After the GPD’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit arrived at the scene to process the weapon, Mayes was placed in handcuffs and transported to police headquarters. Being read his Miranda rights and asked to speak about the incident, Mayes reportedly stated that he was not going to hurt anyone and was just carrying the gun.
Mayes was then transported to Lamar County Jail without further incident.
