Former Griffin High and Syracuse University basketball standout Josh Pace will conduct his Life/Skills Basketball Camp from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. July 27-28 at Griffin High School.

CHEERLEADING

The Spalding County Cheerleading Association invites all girls ages 3-14 to be a part of the upcoming Cheerleading season. Those wishing to participate can sign up on Saturday from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., through July 27 at the City Park Community Center, 601 Camp Northern Rd.

ALLIGATOR HUNT

SOCIAL CIRCLE — The deadline to apply for an alligator permit for the 2012 season in Georgia is Tuesday, July 31. Hunters must apply for an alligator quota hunt online with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division before midnight on July 31. Selected hunters will receive a temporary harvest tag (permit) and information packet by mail in early August. The 2012 alligator hunting season is Sept. 1-Oct. 7.

Georgia has nine alligator zones. Of the top 5 alligators harvested in each zone, all were 11 feet or longer. The top 12 alligators overall were more than 13 feet long — the longest being 13 feet, 9 inches from Decatur County. The heaviest alligator harvested weighed 860 pounds and was taken in Quitman County.

How to Apply:

1. Visit www.georgiawildlife.com/hunting/quota. Then click on “Access the NEW Quota Hunt System!”

2. Read all instructions under the “About” tab thoroughly. The instructions contain critical information on how to create an account and successfully submit an application.

3. Create an account, even if you have had an account in the old system. (The new system was launched in 2012).

4. Apply using the instructions provided under the “About” tab.

Quail Forever, in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, Griffin Gun Club and Devotie Baptist Church, is offering free hunter safety courses at Devotie Baptist Church, 1355 Experiment St. in Griffin, as follows:

— Aug. 28 and 30 (two-night class) from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

— Oct. 2 from 6-8 p.m. Test Only

— Oct. 30 from 6-8 p.m. Test Only

— Dec. 4 from 6-8 p.m. Test Only

Other classes will be taught at different locations as follows:

— Sept. 22, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (free lunch), at the Big Red Oak Plantation in Gay, Ga.
