Hamm camp coach Dee Brice, from Thomaston, was excited to help the youth learn the game of football.
“I love football and I love helping the kids in the community, even if it’s in another community outside of my own,” Brice said. “I can’t play anymore so I might as well coach.”
The coaches weren’t the only ones who enjoyed the camp — the youth had a good time as well.
“This camp keeps you active and it’s fun,” said Matthew Fisher, 11, who plays cornerback.
“I love playing football and coach Lamont was my favorite coach,” said Antonio Brittian, 12. “I want to play on the defensive line when I grow up and I know I’ll learn a lot as I get older just from playing in this camp.”
Trevor Reid, a student at Rehoboth Road Middle School, said he plans to play football for his school this fall. Although basketball is his favorite sport, Reid said he will take the things he’s learned at the Hamm camp to the football field this fall.
“I learned that you have to be quick through the drills and have good footwork,” said Reid, 12. “I want to play on the offensive line next year so I’ve got to be able to move well.”
Lamont Hamm’s daughter Tiffany Ellis, 18, said the camp is an offshoot of what her father would do if he were alive today.
“This is a great camp for the kids in the community,” said Ellis, as she was holding her 1-year-old daughter Jaidyn Harris. “He would really love this.”
The Hamm camp takes a break today, but returns on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. at Volunteer Park. On Friday, a youth punt, pass and catch challenge will be featured as well as a flag football game for the older kids. There will also be the raffling of three gas cards worth a total of $200 and a prize of two footballs signed by former Griffin Bear and current Carolina Panthers safety Sherrod Martin.
