LITHONIA — The Griffin Grasshoppers 17-Under team defeated the Opelika (Ala.) Ballers 63-59 Sunday afternoon to win the Atlanta Peach State Classic at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church gym. The team went undefeated in the tournament at 6-0.

DeAngelo Anthony led the Grasshoppers, which defeated some of the top AAU teams in the state, with 26 points and was named Tournament MVP. Derondell Jenkins and Tae Mayes had 15 each in the title game for the Grasshoppers, which defeated the Georgia Tar Heels (twice), the Southeast Hornets, the Duluth Elite and the Classic City Storms in their run to the championship. All 3 players were selected to the All-Tournament First Team.

“We’re excited to have won the Peach State Classic — we beat some very good teams,” said Grasshoppers head coach Alan “Duck” Richards.

Next for the Griffin Grasshoppers 17U team is the Power 24 Tournament at Emory University in Atlanta, which is slated for Wednesday through Saturday. It will be a NCAA live certified event.
