The month of June has come and gone and so has the first half of the Griffin Gators’ swim season.

The local swim team has done pretty well so far, even though there hasn’t been official records for each meet. The Gators have participated in four meets, but they’ve only received team totals in two of them. Despite that snafu, some individual Gators have dropped times and have been High-Point winners in their age groups. Here is a list of first-half meets and Gators highlights:

* The Macon Waves Tri-Meet, June 9

The Gators competed against the homestanding Macon Waves, the Baldwin Aqua Dragons and the Morgan County Marlins. No team times were given, but swimmers Alanna Wood, Bailee Brown, Dusty Evans and Deborah Hicks dropped their times.

* The Carrollton Invitational, June 16

Alanna Wood, 6, was the star of the show for the Gators, placing first in six events to be the High-Point winner in the girls 6-Under division with 54 points. Wood also finished second in the 200 IM. Bethany Tilson finished as the High-Point winner in the girls 13 & 14 division. The Gators finished third as a team.

* The DCS Summer Splash, June 23

Another young Gator, four-year-old Susannah Murray, swam well in three events. Murray finished third in the 6-Under 25 breaststroke, fourth in the 6-Under 25 backstroke and fifth in the 6-Under 25 freestyle. Connor Ellerbee, 8, placed first in the 50 backstroke for 7 & 8 boys and second in the 8-Under 50 freestyle. Chelsea Jacobs finished second and Mikayla Stormes placed third in the 15 & Over girls 500 freestyle. Soren Wood placed second in the 15 & Over boys 500 freestyle, while Will Davis finished second in the 15 & Over boys 200 butterfly. The Gators finished second overall as a team.

* Macon Waves Heritage Meet, June 30

The Gators highlights for this meet were Alanna Wood placing first in the 6-under girls and Dwayne Harry, 15, placing first overall in the boys 15 & Over division. Other Gators who did well were Drew Tingle, Deborah Hicks and LeeAnn Frank.

“We’ve seen some great improvement in many of the swimmers so far this season. I’m also happy that we placed second at the DCS meet,” said Gators assistant coach Grant Adams. “That was big for our team. Now we need to finish the season strong.”
