The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the education wing of the Eighth Street Baptist Church, 408 Palace St. The guest presenter will be Bob Dull, director of the Griffin Housing Authority.
According to Griffin Branch NAACP President Jewel Walker-Harps, Dull has been asked to elaborate on specific plans for the original Fairmont High School facility and the entire area surrounding the school.
“Graduates of the Vocational High and Fairmont High consider this building to have special historical value to the African-American community and its legacy should be preserved,” Walker-Harps said.
Some of the topics to be discussed Saturday include the concept of the educational prosperity zone, the activities which are about to take place in the Fairmont community through mini grants, the significance of the Promise Neighborhoods planning grants and the benefits to the community provided by the collaboration of the Housing Authority, Southern Crescent Technical College, the University of Georgia, Griffin-Spalding School System and Spalding County Parks and Recreation.
Walker-Harps stressed the fact that this meeting is designed to allow the community and others who have a special interest in the legacy of Fairmont to gain knowledge of plans for the area and to also have the opportunity to give input. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
The local NAACP also extends a special invitation to the pastors and leaders of organizations in the community to attend and help to encourage support for the project, Walker-Harps said.
