There were 197 members of the Griffin High School Class of 2012 who graduated Saturday morning.

“This is a day the Lord has made,” said Griffin-Spalding County School Superintendent Curtis Jones, “it’s been in the making for 12 long years.”

Griffin High School Principal Keith Simmons said “success is a journey, not a destination,” and told the graduates, “your journey continues.”

Simmons and Jones praised the parents for collective or team effort. “We’ve been with them for the last 12 years,” Jones told the families of the graduates, “you’ve been with them their entire lives.”

Jones congratulated the graduates on their success and said “I look forward to more successes from the class of 2012.”

From this point forward, Jones said, “I dare you to find adventure, to join the military and be the best soldier, to go to college and be a better student than you were at Griffin High School.”

He dared them to come back here and see your teachers, tell them your life story, come back and talk to the students about your successes, they’ll believe you sooner than they’ll believe us.”

Jones told the students, “may God guide you and yours on your future successes. Now lets get you graduated.”

The Griffin High Class of 2012 salutatorian was Sarah Catherine Hill, who’s sister four years ago was valedictorian. Hill will be attending the University of Mississippi. She challenged her classmates to “become the greatest you can possibly be.”

The Griffin High School Class of 2012 valedictorian was Dominique McCoy Appling, who was accepted to colleges across the country, Simmons said, but opted to stay in Georgia and attend Oglethorpe on a full academic scholarship and major in engineering. Appling encouraged his classmates to “rise to the occasion as we cross the intersection with the real world. Be the best person you can be. Do many great things and never forget we are Griffin.”

Hill asked classmates to remember Shane Hackbart, who was killed in 9th grade. Senior Class President Mira Amin presented flowers to his mother, Gail Reed Hackbart.

The Superintendent is a dull-witted moron. Thank God my children are not subject to such an idiot.
