SPORTS BRIEF: SHS spring sports 24 hours away; GHS spring starts Monday

Spring sports are gearing up at Spalding High School. Fans who can’t wait to catch the action won’t have a long wait. Two of the sports — tennis and soccer — play in the next 24 hours.

The SHS boys and girls soccer teams host Monticello at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in a preseason varsity scrimmage doubleheader. That same day, the SHS boys and girls tennis teams travel to take on First Presbyterian Day School in Macon in the regular season opener at 5 p.m.

The Spalding High soccer teams host non-region foe Luella at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14 in the season opener, while the track and field teams open the season Feb. 29 in a three-way meet at Lamar County and the SHS golf teams open the season at 4 p.m. March 1 at Forsyth Country Club against Mary Persons.

The SHS baseball team, the 2011 Class AAA state runners-up, will start a new season with a scrimmage at 1 p.m. Feb. 18 at Hardaway. The Jags' regular-season opener is Feb. 25 against LaGrange at 1 p.m. at Jaguar Field.

At Griffin High, spring sports begin on Monday, Feb. 13 with action by the boys and girls soccer teams. They travel to Macon to face Howard High in non-region play, starting at 5 p.m. Three days later, the Bears track and field teams will travel to East Coweta High for a tune up meet. On Feb. 18, the Bears baseball team will travel to play Jonesboro in a scrimmage and the Bears golf team will begin play on Feb. 28 at Upson-Lee.

The Griffin rifle team, state champions in 2011, is in the middle of its match season and will host Banneker High Thursday.
